OSEWA NI NATTE ORIMASU
INSTEAD OF “GENKI”
Do you know that
元気 (Genki)
means Health and Fine.
Usually as a native Japanese speaker, we use when you didn’t meet this person for a while, you want to know this person is if it’s healthy or not which means good or bad.
But again, this is quite casual way to ask.
As an adult,
We also use いかがですか?
(ikaga desuka?) in the business setting than GENKI.
Japanese culture,
English culture is
completely different.
This is the reason,
self study doesn’t help at all because your idea is in English and translating into Japanese…
The Struggle of Isolation:
Living in Japan, far from your native land, you have faced moments of profound loneliness.
Difficult to make new friends, business and networking opportunities, and even job interviews –
it’s like living in a bubble.
The struggle to communicate effectively in Japanese has had a significant impact, often leaving you reliant on Google Translate, scrolling through my phone in search of words and phrases to bridge the gap. 📱🔍
But let me tell you, this isn’t the end of the story. It’s just the beginning of a beautiful journey of learning and connection. 🌟🛤️
Here are 3 tips that changed my perspective on learning Japanese:
Passive Learning vs. Active Learning: Just like learning your native language, acquiring Japanese is about active engagement. Think about how you’ve mastered English – by using it actively in everyday life, not just by reading or listening. 🗣️👂
Academic Study vs. Practical Study: Academic learning often leaves you sounding like a textbook. Remember the classic, “How are you? I’m fine, thank you, and you?” It’s the same in Japanese. The goal is to move beyond textbook phrases and learn how to communicate naturally, just like native speakers. 📚🙋♂️
Quantity Study vs. Quality Study: Hours of studying don’t necessarily translate to effective learning. Quality matters. Think about how Japanese children learn – through natural conversations with their parents, not from textbooks. This is the key to building a strong, intuitive understanding of the language. 🧒🎓
